  • Description
Keigwin is believed to have been built around the end of the 14th century and is part of the oldest house in Mousehole. The property was one of the few houses that survived the 1595 Spanish raid when most of Mousehole was burnt as a reprisal for the Armada. The original house was divided into two dwellings around 1900. Keigwin is one of these, and makes a quite generous three or four bedroom property in the centre of the village. This Grade II* listed heritage property is very distinctive with its fenced large open porch with large flagstone floor underneath the Jacobean room which is supported by four substantial granite columns.

The wide entrance doorway leads into a spacious entrance hall with central staircase leading to the first floor. Immediately to the right of the hallway is the first of two reception rooms on the ground floor. The sitting room shows off its exposed granite wall with former open fireplace and granite lintel coupled with timber panelled ceiling and beams. This room gives a flavour of the character throughout in this historic and famous property in Mousehole. Moving further into the property, a second reception room, the dining room, has similar exposed stone wall, lintels and beams as the sitting room and continues this delightful feeling of walking through a piece of Mousehole's history. The rear of the property is a later addition to the property and is now the kitchen, fitted with a range of wall and floor mounted units, breakfast table and rear access door to a courtyard and garden. Completing the ground floor is the downstairs shower room and WC.
  • . 2
Stairs rise to the first floor which has three bedrooms and two further reception rooms, bathroom and shower room. A short flight of stairs on the right of the split landing leads to a fabulous master bedroom with an original granite fireplace and windows to the front elevation. This bedroom has the convenience of a private shower room adjacent to it. There is a second double bedroom to the rear of the property with a window overlooking the courtyard garden and a smaller third bedroom also in this part of the property. Both these bedrooms flank the family bathroom which has a bath and a separate shower cubicle and services both bedrooms.

The current vendors use the unique front room of the property as their office or study. This fabulous room could easily make for further sleeping quarters; it is spacious with raised ceiling and full of character with beams and timber panelled walls in keeping with a historic property. Adjacent to this room is a long dressing room with various wardrobes and storage cupboards. Completing the first floor is spacious dual aspect sitting room with a marvellous barrel ceiling. This light and airy room gives a wonderful feeling of space and such a feature is rarely found in period properties in Mousehole.
  • . 4
Moving to the rear of the property there is an external utility room and store and a quiet courtyard area off the kitchen. Down a small pathway from the courtyard is something truly unique in Mousehole, a quite substantial low-walled garden. This freehold garden is exclusively for the use of the property. It is mostly laid to lawn, relatively level and has a range of specimen plants and shrubs. This is an idyllic place to sit and enjoy the summer sunshine with friends and family.

The lucky purchaser, we are sure, will enjoy being the next custodians of such an integral part of Mousehole's history as much as our clients have done for more than three decades.
  • Location
The quaint and historic harbourside community of Mousehole has a unique and timeless character, largely unchanged over the years. The granite and slate architecture, set around a picturesque harbour all epitomise the Cornish coastal village. Known far and wide for its display of Christmas lights, it has seen much history, both tragic and joyful and was the only place where the Spanish made a landing centuries ago. The nearby colourful town of Penance provides more extensive shopping and commercial facilities, together with regular boats to the Scilly Isles and a main line rail connection with London Paddington.
